³The Jaune Toujours sound is a high-octane combination with uplifting lyrics that celebrate life, music and the cultural diversity of their home city. At the centre of their musical armoury is the accordion, that most traditional of Belgian instruments, wielded by founder Piet Maris. His brother Bart, one of the leading jazz trumpeters, leads the super-tight brass section, which can switch effortlessly form the trombone-heavy ska stylings of 60s Jamaica to the wild, swirling melodies of Eastern Europe. Standout tracks include ³Ici Bxl², the band¹s anthem, on which Piet Maris¹ guttural vocals make the case for the recognition of Brussels the capital of surrealism, with its sailors and its Gypsies, its refugees and its African cafés, as being the ultimate European city. ³Aire de Rien² is an ironic ska paean to French auto-route service stations, climaxing in a soaring trumpet solo that captures something of the excitement the band generate live. These musical meetings offer a vision of the future, Jaune Toujours suggest, worth celebrating and defending.² James Attlee in Songline
